They can also defend much more threateningly as well, so wisest to be more patient with good players. Nevertheless, dont respect others so much to the point that you don't take any chances and put no pressure on them. A big part of Pickleball’s allure is that it is a simple game. With that comes a limited amount of complexity that you can mesh into your game. Before long, you’ve seen all the tendencies and patterns that a game will present you. With that reasoning, it’s wise to say that you’ll be that much more of a dangerous player if you can break from the mold, or cookie-cutter commonalities, that most of the average to good players employ. That means a couple things: 1) Hitting the ball WHERE your opponent least expects. 2) Hitting the ball at a PACE that your opponent least expects. Once you are able to do this at a high clip (i.e. % rate), you’ll quickly realize that it’s the element of surprise that usually forces someone to pop up the ball - or better yet, makes an unforced error. Note - The INSIDE OUT is also known as a MISDIRECTION or NO-LOOK, depending on the sport you’re playing. For most people, it’s not an inherently easy technique to learn, but once you do, you may appreciate having taken my advice and learned this all too impactful shot to neglect. In most sports, you hear about how the game slows down as you become a better player. This is also the case with Pickleball. Success with this game is dependent upon making and executing quick decisions. As the game seems to slow down, you are able to construct more points by being intentional with every shot - especially your offensive attacks. Instead of just getting the ball over low, it’s also crucial to target specific areas in the court, as well as areas that are difficult to defend near the body. One universal tactic that great players have in their arsenal is knowing and being able to attack their opponent’s dominant side close to their body - this means if they are right handed you want to “jam” or “handcuff” them by hitting the ball to their RIGHT hip, rib cage, or shoulder area - especially with the “speed up” or “flick” shot. This is commonly known as the “chicken wing” which often causes defenders to make pop up the ball, or hit into the net. Keep in mind, if your opponent is left-handed (or left side dominant) you would want to target the left side of their body. As you improve, you will undoubtedly notice more people targeting the same areas on you. So equally important is learning how to defend, or better yet, counter-attack these shots. What’s the fastest way to get better in pickleball? In my opinion, working side by side with a coach who really cares and is genuinely invested in your progression in this sport is of utmost importance. From there, drilling and then playing immediately afterwards really helps reinforce what you just learned - especially when attempting new skills and/or strategies in an actual game. Finally, maximum efficacy of a lesson or training session can be attained and sustained through the use of video recording. Drilling was an acquired part of my Pickeball lifestyle that serves many purposes for me today. One is obviously getting better. Another is getting other people better.
